Sahasi Didibahini Widow Empowerment Project

Support widow setting up a shop to support her family.

We foster livelihoods and social wellbeing of poor single or widowed mothers with school-age children in Madhesh Province. Participants receive a one-off cash donation for microenterprise start-up (approx. AU$400) and 12 months counselling support. Counselling is focused on financial and emotional well-being (mothers) and school guidance (mothers and children). Our local partner in Nepal, Creative Didibahini Organization Nepal (CDON), is paid AU$1,000 per participant to deliver the core project.

Widows in Nepal experience stigma, discrimination and social isolation. They frequently lose access to their husband’s property and face a daily struggle to provide for themselves and their children. Stress and poverty lead to poor mental health and parenting challenges, and their daughters are at risk of early marriage.

Participants have gained some financial independence and contributed to their family’s well-being. They have also reported increased confidence and community participation, with some extended families becoming more supportive. A few participants have found it difficult to engage fully in economic activities due to lack of business management skills, ongoing emotional trauma or lack of family support.
